Welcome to our Travel Diaries

The purpose of these diaries is to chronicle a number of trips to South America and elsewhere and offer information to anyone interested in travelling to the same places and in the same manner that we travelled.

There are a few major considerations that should be pointed out. Firstly, neither my wife and travelling companion, Margaret, nor I, are “Spring Chickens”! Indeed we are both pensioners! Secondly, Margaret is English (from Yorkshire) but has what might be described as a “Mediterranean” complexion whilst I, for my part,  am of Anglo-Ghanaian descent – we are not, looks-wise at least, a typical West European couple! The third point to note is that I endeavour to speak both Spanish and Portuguese; the consequence of this is that in Spanish-speaking America I am assumed to be Brazilian whilst in Brazil I am not infrequently taken for a Cuban!

Our aim is to take one major trip to South America every year which we fit in between repeated visits to our apartment in Northern Portugal and  an annual winter escape to Mauritius. We are not interested at all in luxury or in mixing with any but local people; budget accommodation (a hammock where needs be) and the prevailing cuisine suit us fine!
